Essence Peel-off base - a Reappraisal, & Ready For Boarding

http://nailovelogy.blogspot.com.au/2012/11/peel-off-base-essence-ready-for-boarding.html
I mentioned Essence's Peel-off base coat in my last post on butter London's Black Knight. It is basically PVA glue for craft/ artwork- white sticky gluey gel we use at school to stick papers, cardboard, fabric...Everything because it's safe and easily removed. Also named: Elmer's, BIC's white glue, 白膠漿...

Its magic as base coat for hard to remove glitter polishes have been well reviewed by Oz bloggers Pretty Purple Polish and scientifically explained by Lab Muffin

So when I saw Essence's Peel-off base coat (AUD$3.5) at Target, I grabbed a few bottles even I had Bostik PVA already! Bostik PVA glue dries and clears quick and lovely, but unfortunately, my nail plate was lifted off alongside the polish and glue - leaving my nails thinned and fragile =(

For experiment sake, I tried Essence's peel-off base on top of naked nail, on normal base-coat coated nail, and on nail hardener coated nail; all followed with polish. Sadly, it did the same as Bostik, and the worst damage was on base-coat coated nail. The better (stickier) the base-coat, the worst the damage! I also tried the peel-off base on my hubby's nail...he too is convinced it 'scratched' his nail - he refused to let me photo his nail to show here ;P

I am keen to hear from your personal experience. If you'd like to give it a go and cannot find the peel-off base coat at your local shops, leave me a comment and email and I shall send you my unused brand-new bottle (Oz and NZ only).   Update: see troubleshoot by Labmuffin

The rest of the Ready for Boarding collection is awesome for summer mani, which I used in my LSD splatter, along with two Marble mania. At AUD$2.5-3.5 per bottle, these polishes are perfect for nailart!

  2. Hi Shotliver! Check out Labmuffin's recipe on PVA glue home-made peel-off, basically just the glue or dilute a bit with water. Let me know if you'd like a bottle of original Essence peel-off send to you for trial =)

  3. its late... ok not so late for those young'n's but am I understanding this right?

PVA style glue on clean dry nails as base coat, so you just peal off instead of remover?

If this is right then I am one really really happy person :) I have 2 teenage daughters and somehow there is never any polish remover when I want/need to do my nails... even though I seem to be buying it almost monthly.

    :)

    1. Hi suecc, you're a nice mum! My mother told me off wearing nail polishes when I was teen (seems like a decade ago now...).
Yes, PVA style glue on clean dry and HEALTHY nails, nail polish removal is very easy and fun even (if you're a bubble wrap popper like me).
However 1) don't expect everlasting polish (2 day guarantee. Mine lasted 4 days only 'coz I can't wait to swatch polishes). 2) layering from PVA base to top coat require some mastering for durability and removal (just like acetone clean-up, require practise) 3) If you can, try to get a bottle of Essence's peel-off base coat from Targets (AUD$3.45) to start, less fuss and you've a bottle for making your own PVA glue later.
      Happy polishing =)
